St. Mary’s Column has been standing under the chestnut trees in Slavko Osterc Square since 1815, making it the oldest monument in the town. It is linked to the event of Pope Pius VII’s safe return to Rome from the captivity of the French Emperor Napoleon. It expresses in a unique way the devotion of the local people and in particular how they feel about the Virgin Mary.
